Peninsula Room Wedding: A Planner’s Guide to your Dream Northern Michigan Wedding

Venue Guides

There is something truly magical about the way the light hits the water on Old Mission Peninsula, and a Peninsula Room wedding captures that “Up North” essence like nowhere else.

If you’ve been following along for a while, you know that while my design style has evolved from the early days of Pinterest burlap to more elevated, timeless celebrations, my heart still beats for venues that feel like home. After executing over 150 weddings, I’ve seen it all, but The Peninsula Room remains one of my absolute favorite gems in Michigan and the venue I have worked at the most!

Whether you’re a local or planning a destination wedding in Traverse City, let’s dive into why this venue should be at the top of your list.

Why I Love The Peninsula Room

As a planner, my priority is making sure my couples can actually enjoy their day while I handle the logistics. Working at The Peninsula Room makes that promise easy to keep. The staff here is nothing short of amazing- they are true professionals who understand the nuances of hospitality.

The space itself is incredibly versatile, but what really wins me over every time is that quaint, “up north” feel combined with unreal views of West Grand Traverse Bay. It offers a level of serenity that is hard to find at larger, more commercial venues. What I find most special about a Peninsula Room wedding truly is the atmosphere. While the venue can accommodate a traditional guest count, the layout and the historic charm make every celebration feel intimate and intentional. It’s the kind of place where guests feel like they are at a private estate rather than a banquet hall. It’s elegant, elevated, and deeply meaningful.

The Spaces at The Peninsula Room

Your morning starts in the Library and the Genevieve’s Suite, the venue’s two designated getting-ready rooms. The Library offers a classic, established feel with its dark wood and shelving, while the Geneva Suite provides a bright, functional space for your wedding party to prep. Because these rooms are adjacent to each other, the proximity is a huge win for photography and timing. However, it also requires a bit of tactical maneuvering to ensure “no-see” moments are protected, which is exactly where my team and I come in to manage the hallways and door-knocks.

The ceremony space, The Great Lawn, is centered around a clear view of the bay. It’s simple, open, and highlights the natural landscape of Old Mission Peninsula. But as a planner, I’m always thinking about your backup plan. If the Michigan weather doesn’t cooperate, we move into the Peninsula Room where there will be a partial room flip between the end of your ceremony and beginning of your reception. Ceremonies in inclement weather do not feel like a backup plan- the stunning architectural space with wood beams and a warm, historic character makes your ceremony feel cozy on a rainy day. Whether you are outside overlooking the water or inside the hall, your Peninsula Room wedding will feel intentional, not like a compromise.

The Peninsula Room serves as the heart of your reception, and it is where your design really comes to life. It features high ceilings with exposed wood beams and a massive stone fireplace that anchors the room, giving it a warm, historic character that you just can’t replicate in a modern venue. It’s a dedicated space that feels substantial yet cozy- it’s large enough for a high-energy dance floor but structured in a way that dinner feels like a meaningful gathering rather than a crowded banquet. The neutral tones of the wood and stone act as a sophisticated canvas, allowing us to lean into anything from minimalist greenery to lush, complex floral installations.

Photo Locations

One of the biggest advantages of a Peninsula Room wedding is that you don’t have to leave the property to get a massive variety of shots. I love a venue that offers visual depth! Here, we can hit several distinct looks all within walking distance:

  • The Ivy Wall: For a European-inspired texture, the ivy-covered structure is one of my favorite spots for a first look.
  • The Gardens: The manicured garden beds provide a soft, romantic backdrop that works perfectly for family formals or bridesmaid portraits.
  • The Lakeshore: You get direct access to the water for those quintessential Traverse City blue-water shots. I love golden hour photos here!
  • The Vineyards: Located just steps away, the vineyards offer that structured, agricultural beauty unique to Old Mission Peninsula. Ideal for newlywed portriats.
  • The Woods: If you want a darker, more organic contrast to the open bay, the wooded paths provide a lush, “woodsy” feel without leaving the venue grounds. Wedding party photos or family photos work great here!

Insider Tips from Your Wedding Planner

Because I want you to be completely present for every moment, here are a few pro details to keep in mind:

  • Access Times: The getting-ready rooms are adjacent to each other, which is great for photos! However, the venue has specific guidelines about clearing these rooms as well as the ceremony space by a certain time. This is where having a coordinator is vital- we handle that behind the scenes shuffle so you aren’t worrying about luggage or makeup bags while you’re trying to say “I do.”
  • Public Access: Keep in mind that the nearby restaurant is open to the public. While the wedding space remains private, having an expert sounding board to help manage guest flow is always a plus!

Investment & Budgeting

Transparency is key to a stress-free engagement! For a Peninsula Room wedding, our clients generally have total wedding budgets ranging from $50,000 to $75,000.

From the venue side, within this overall budget is your full-day rental, the getting-ready rooms, and their exceptional in-house catering and bar services. This allows you to focus the rest of your budget on those elevated details like lush florals and custom stationery.

Is This the Venue for You?

I always say that your venue should be a reflection of your love story. The Peninsula Room is a perfect match for the down-to-earth, nature loving couple. If you value a relaxed atmosphere where the scenery does the heavy lifting, but you still want a sophisticated experience for your guests, you’ve found your spot.

My Creative Vision: Past & Future

I’ve had the joy of transforming this space in many ways- from whimsical, “fairytale” weddings to classy, high-contrast black and white designs. The neutral, historic palette of the Great Hall acts as a beautiful canvas for any style.

One design I am dying to implement here? A full, lush garden vibe. Think patterned linens, vintage china, and centerpieces overflowing with seasonal blooms. The Peninsula Room’s natural charm would pair perfectly with a more maximalist garden aesthetic!
